The Who, What, Where, When & Why of my fitness regime
After traveling for the past month, I am jet-lagged, run-down, and dare I say it, very nearly sick. (Not in the contagious way, more in the “my body hates me” kind of way.) At any rate, the last thing I felt like doing today was a work-out. But – what kind of athlete bows down to a tiny little cold?!? We’re in an Olympic year people!
That said, while I was keen to get moving, I definitely wanted to take it a little easier than usual. My fave “under the weather work-out”, Pilates initiates the abdominals, lower back, hips, and buttocks, as well as the upper body. All together it provides an intense, focused burn that combines aerobic and anaerobic energy systems, without taxing the respiratory system or training to failure.
And so, I pulled out my trusty Pilates machine, and hopped on it… in my pyjamas. (a.k.a. pants free)
This video was shot a couple of weeks ago, but features many of the exercises I did today.
Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a total body conditioning routine that encourages strength, flexibility, control, and body awareness.
It is low impact, and adaptable to almost any fitness level.
I am fortunate enough to own a Pilates Performer, but different forms of the exercises can be accomplished without equipment.
When deciding which version is right for you, it is important to consider your goals, resources, and ability.
I myself have tried mat based practice including the Stott and Winsor programs, and books like The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler.
Improved posture, agility, strength and flexibility will be enjoyed no matter how you accomplish the exercises.
Many people enjoy the benefits of Pilates and include it’s essential principles (Concentration, Control, Center, Precision, Breath, Imagination & Intuition) in their regular exercise regime. It is considered a complimentary training method in many sports, used as part of rehabilitation programs, and enjoyed by fitness enthusiasts the world over.
The pant less part however, is pure Tita ;)
Not only did I not wear any pants, in that video… I’m not wearing any now. How’s that for dedication?
Do you love it?!?
